URBANA, Ill. — A Catholic priest on the University of Illinois campus has been charged with selling cocaine from his church office and rectory.
The Rev. Christopher Layden pleaded not guilty Thursday to two counts of delivery of less than 1 gram of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church and one count of possession with intent to deliver 1 to 15 grams of cocaine near a church.
The 33-year-old was arrested Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic Newman Center after investigators found 3 grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia while searching his home and office. His bond was set at $50,000.

Man Attempts To Amputate Own Arm In Denny’s
MODESTO – (CBS13/AP) ― Modesto police say a local man who tried to cut off his own arm at a Denny’s restaurant thought he had injected air into one of his veins while shooting cocaine and would die unless he took drastic action.The man, identified by police as Michael Lasiter, 33, rushed into the restaurant on Friday night and started stabbing himself in the right arm with a butter knife he grabbed from a customer’s table, police say. When that knife didn’t work, Lasiter allegedly took a butcher knife from the kitchen and dug it into his arm.
Lasiter, who was subdued with a taser and taken to a local hospital with severe cuts, told officers he thought he needed to amputate his arm to keep himself from dying from the cocaine injection, says Modesto police Sgt. Brian Findlen.
The Denny’s closed for the night after the incident.

Smuggling Storage Area #1-A British woman who allegedly hid cocaine under her wig has been arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling in Norway.
An airport customs officer noticed the 32-year-old had ‘a lot of hair’.
Closer examination revealed a one kilogram (2.2lb) bag of cocaine glued to her head under a hairpiece.
The Verdens Gang newspaper said the drug was glued so firmly to the woman’s real hair that police had to take her to hospital to have it removed.
A spokesman for Norway’s customs service said: ‘During a conversation with the woman, a customs official noticed she had a lot of hair and thought she was wearing a wig.
‘The woman and the drugs were later handed to police.’
The unnamed woman was stopped at Vaernes airport, near Trondheim, after flying in from Copenhagen on Sunday evening.
A court has remanded her until July 15.

Mexico drug smugglers make Jesus statue of cocaine
NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico (Reuters) – U.S. customs officials have seized a statue of Jesus Christ made from plaster mixed with cocaine — the latest sophisticated attempt to smuggle drugs from Mexico.
Sniffer dogs at the border crossing in Laredo, Texas, alerted officials to the smell of narcotics in the 6.6 pound (3 kilo) statue, which was in the trunk of a car being driven by a Mexican woman into the United States last week.
“The statue tested positive for cocaine,” Nancy Herrera, an official at the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas said on Friday.
U.S. border police arrested a 61-year-old Mexican man accused of offering the woman $80 to carry the statue to the bus station in downtown Laredo.
The woman escaped back to Mexico, Herrera said.
Tighter U.S. security and Mexico’s deployment of thousands of soldiers along the border are pushing smugglers to try increasingly sophisticated techniques like hiding drugs in sealed beer cans, U.S. officials say.
The average price of a gram of pure cocaine in the United States is around $130, according to U.S. government data.
