I’ll just issue a blanket NSFW warning for these top 5 videos.
#1-“Fight the Power” by Public Enemy
I love PE’s style, but I can do without their Farrakhan loving. But their lyrics were about 20x more intelligent than most of the rap that is produced today.
#2-“Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugar Hill Gang
How can you not like this song?
#3-“Nuthin but a G Thang”-Dr. Dre
I just got a contact high from listening to this.
#4-“Walk this Way”-Run-DMC with Aerosmith
The scene: a bus on the way home from school, 6th grade. An inquisitive youngster, who would one day write a kick-ass blog on something that would be called the “internet”, asks his friend if he can listen to his Walkman (yes, a cassette player). The youngster put on the earphones and, before pressing play, asked his friend, “Hey, what is this?” “It’s some rap group called Run-DMC.” The youngster was intrigued. Upon hearing that “rap” was also totally frowned upon by his parents and also caused its listeners to have instant access to guns and girls, he was a definite fan. Man, that kid was smart…and good-looking.
#5-“The Message”-Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
I was too young to remember when this came out, but it’s got a great hook.
