We love Cleveland tourism videos, pt. 2

June 16, 2009

Yesterday’s Cleveland tourism video was such cinematic brilliance we decided to feature the second video. This video will inspire you yet again with a renewed love of your hometown. Well, again, not if you live in Detroit though. Sorry residents of D-town.

Both Cleveland videos sent in by Levi, a brave man waging a battle against IWS. We’ll be having a candlelight vigil in support of his plight next week. Show your support by burning a tiny little nub of a candle in Levi’s honor.

30 Foot Obama Dances on Building

November 4, 2008

Oneupweb is a digital marketing agency located in Traverse City, Michigan. The company was supporting Barack Obama in the U.S. Presidential election this year. After having multiple Obama/Biden campaign signs stolen from their property, Oneup employees decided to craft a campaign sign that couldn’t be stolen. People of the world, listen to me now: Never screw with techies. They will take their revenge in ways you and I will never conceptualize. This is one of the most clever collective middle-fingers I’ve seen in sometime.

The Daily Chum is no fan of Obama’s policies, but we hate any form of political intimidation or attempts to suppress others’ right of political expression. Douchebags of all parties: stop screwing with people’s campaign propaganda.

Michigan residents: Stop arresting patients and vote Yes on Proposal 1

October 28, 2008

Your Daily Chum is fervently behind the effort to legalize marijuana for medicinal use in the state of Michigan. In graduate school, The Chum Master has read more policy papers and patient and doctor accounts than you can imagine. Having personally met dozens of Michigan citizens who utilized marijuana to ease their sufferings from diseases like cancer, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS, we strongly urge all Michigan residents to vote “Yes” on Proposal 1 on November 4th. It’s a simple issue: will we allow the seriously ill to choose their method of treatment or will we continue to buy into the decades of lies spoonfed to us by the federal government and pharmaceutical companies?

The Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care (MCCC) is a grassroots organization devoted to passing Proposal 1, the medical marijuana initiative on the November 2008 ballot. Proposal 1 will protect seriously ill Michiganders suffering from illnesses like cancer, HIV/AIDS, and multiple sclerosis from the threat of arrest and jail for simply trying to alleviate their pain.

If Proposal 1 is passed by a majority of voters on November 4, Michigan law will allow these patients – some of the most vulnerable members of our community – to use, possess, and grow their own marijuana for medical purposes, with their doctors’ approval. It will create a registry of patients and a system of ID cards, so that law enforcement will easily be able to tell who is a legitimate participant in the program and who is not, and establish penalties for false statements and fraudulent cards. And by maintaining current prohibitions on public use and driving under the influence of marijuana, Proposal 1 will ensure that the law does exactly what it sets out to do – protect the seriously ill from the threat of arrest and jail, and do so responsibly.

Please take time to watch the interview below of how marijuana eased the sufferings of a woman facing cancer.

This ad features Manistee, Mich. resident Dr. George Wagoner, whose wife of 51 years, Beverly, succumbed to cancer in 2007. During her ordeal, she found that few prescription medications effectively combated her chemotherapy-related nausea as well as medical marijuana, which Dr. Wagoner procured for her. Since her passing, he has dedicated himself to ensuring that no one else has to break the law in order to relieve their loved ones’ suffering. As he notes in the ad, “It shouldn’t be a crime to follow a doctor’s advice.”

Why does local news always suck?–Man arrested for having sex with vacuum in car wash

October 21, 2008

(Recreated picture of the alleged menage a trois)

Mad props to Jon for sending this and the headline which I blatantly ripped off.

THOMAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) – Police say a Michigan man has been arrested after “receiving sexual favors from a vacuum” at a car wash.

The Saginaw News reports the 29-year-old Swan Creek Township man was arrested Thursday in Saginaw County’s Thomas Township, about 90 miles northwest of Detroit.

Police Sgt. Gary Breidinger says a resident called to report suspicious activity at the car wash about 6:45 a.m. An officer approached on foot and caught the man in the act.

The suspect, whose name wasn’t immediately released, is being held in the Saginaw County Jail.

Even dead people are leaving Detroit

August 13, 2008

From our friends at Students for a Free Economy

Even Dead People Are Fleeing Detroit

You know it’s bad when corpses can’t even handle being (not being?) in Detroit.

From today’s WSJ:

Where Have All the Graveyards Gone?
Decades ago, Detroit started experiencing white flight. Then blacks started fleeing too. Now, the Detroit News reports, Departed-Americans are departing–which is to say, their remains no longer remain:

From 2002 through 2007, the remains of about 1,000 people have been disinterred and moved out of the city, according to permits stored in metal filing cabinets in the city’s department of health. Looked at in another way, for about every 30 living human beings who leave Detroit, one dead human being follows.

The paper adds, “Although there is little information or statistical evidence regarding the phenomenon across the country, it is quite likely that Detroit and its surrounding communities lead the way, as it does in population loss among the living.” Of course, some places make it more complicated for the dead to leave. For instance, in Chicago, they have to register to vote at their new address.

A sign of (hopefully) things to come: Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick ordered to jail for violated terms of his bond

August 7, 2008

***Update-Friday, 8/8/08-Michigan’s attorney general says he’s bringing assault charges against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick after the mayor had a physical confrontation with a detective trying to deliver a subpoena.

The mayor faces two counts of assaulting or obstructing a police officer in the furtherance of their duties. Each felony count brings up to 2 years in prison or a fine of $2,000.***

Kwame, Kwame, Kwame, can’t you see

Dirty text got you up in perjury……..

That’s just a little ditty I’m working on. I’m still trying to get the Biggie Smalls’ estate to let me sample “Hypnotize” and I’ll have a hit on my hands for sure.

Anyway, Detroit’s Mayoral Douchebag, Kwame Kilpatrick violated his bond and is on his way to jail.

WOOD TV

DETROIT (AP) — Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, charged with perjury and other felonies for his testimony in a civil trial, was ordered to jail Thursday because he violated his bond by taking a quick trip to Canada without notifying authorities.

Kilpatrick apologized and acknowledged that he made a mistake when he visited Windsor, Ontario, minutes away from Detroit, for city business last month. But 36th District Court Judge Ronald Giles was not moved, saying he needed to treat the mayor like any other defendant.

“What matters to me … is how the court overall is perceived and how if it was not Kwame Kilpatrick sitting in that seat, if it was John Six-Pack sitting in that seat, what would I do? And that answer is simple,” Giles said.

Lest you lose track, Kwame will also find out Friday morning if Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox will press charges against the “mayor” for assault on a detective that attempted to serve Kilpatrick a subpoena. Kwame’s attorney thinks an assault charge against his client is “a done deal.”

Kalamazoo, Michigan (U.S.) police officer smashes handcuffed suspect’s head into wall, knocks out 3 of suspect’s teeth. Consequence: a 10-day suspension.

June 20, 2008

Kalamazoo police officer Derek Nugent slammed a 16 yr. old suspect’s face into a wall at a police station, resulting in 3 of the boy’s teeth breaking. The suspect’s hands were handcuffed behind him, so he was not a physical threat to the officer. The officer received a whooping 10-day suspension. The suspect, an african-american 16 yr. old boy, has a history of criminal problems. Apparently, those 2 factors are enough to let the officer off with a slap on the wrist. Quite disgusting. Even more disgusting is the following “explanation” that continues to enable police abuse like this.

No one is justifying what Officer Nugent did, but the Kalamazoo County prosecutor confirms the teen has a long list of run ins with the law, including assault and battery and arson.

Well, hell, that makes everything ok, then, right? Imagine if there had been no video…..or imagine if this kid was from a white, middle-class family? A whole different story then…

Michigan official files FOIA on private organization
June 18, 2008

I wrote a post back in March about an official for Billings Township, Michigan trying to file a FOIA on a private grassroots organization. It seemed a little hard to believe so I suggested taking it with a grain of salt. Now, someone from the grassroots organization (Concerned Citizens of Billings Township) has found that blog post and confirmed that the story is accurate.

“We did get a FOIA from an ex official/current assignee of the Township. She is running for Township Clerk again.”

No wonder they’re concerned.

“Never bring a bomb to a gunfight”

June 19, 2008

Not the brightest bank robber you’ll meet.

from Core Principles

Thursday, June 19, 2008
Someone said, “Never bring a bomb to a gunfight.”
From various media reports… An attempted bank robbery in Canton, Michigan played out like a scene from a movie Monday when a man who police say claimed to have a bomb was stopped by a customer armed with a pistol.

The drama started just after a bank on Michigan Ave. opened around 9 a.m. Police say 54-year-old Joseph Webster from Washtenaw County walked up to a teller and handed her a note claiming he had a bomb strapped to his body.

The fast-thinking teller hit the silent alarm while filling a bag with money. Another teller saw the situation unfolding and alerted Nabil Fawzi, 39, a long-time customer. He pulled out a .9 mm handgun (for which he had a CCW permit), racked a bullet in the chamber, pointed it at Webster and announced, “You are not robbing this bank!” The startled Webster countered with, “but, I have a bomb.” Fawzi wasn’t impressed. “I don’t care. You are not robbing this bank!” He then forced the Webster into a chair and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police reported there were no injuries, no issues with Fawzi’s CCW permit, and no bomb found at the scene. Of special note is the fact that no one was injured and the criminal was safely held until police were able to respond at a later time. Incidentally, some banks apparently have a policy prohibiting its employees from carrying a weapon of self-defense.
